Knee swelling after activity in Key West
Knee swelling after sports or activity in Key West: common causes, when to seek orthopedic evaluation, and when to go to the emergency room.

A swollen knee is trying to tell you something
The knee is a complicated joint, and it communicates discomfort in a fairly limited vocabulary. Pain is one signal. Swelling is another. When the knee swells after activity or injury, the joint is responding to something: a ligament strain, a meniscus tear, a fracture, an arthritis flare, or fluid from a direct impact. The swelling itself is not the problem. The swelling is the indicator. The problem is whatever is causing the swelling, and identifying that cause determines what kind of care is appropriate. A swollen knee after a pickleball fall is not the same situation as a swollen knee after a chronic arthritis flare, even if they look similar from the outside.
Common causes of knee swelling after activity
The most common causes of knee swelling after sports or physical activity include ligament sprains, particularly of the ACL, MCL, LCL, or PCL, meniscus tears from twisting forces, fractures involving the knee joint or kneecap, patellar injuries from direct impact, arthritis flares triggered by unusual activity levels, and bursitis from repeated impact or prolonged kneeling. Swelling that appears within the first hour or two of an injury, particularly swelling significant enough to limit joint motion, often indicates bleeding inside the joint (hemarthrosis). This pattern is more likely with ligament tears and fractures than with minor strains, and it warrants prompt evaluation.
When to seek evaluation
Seek orthopedic evaluation for knee swelling that appears within hours of an injury or significant activity, swelling significant enough to limit normal bending or straightening of the joint, inability to bear weight comfortably, a sensation that the knee gave way or buckled during the injury, a knee that locks or catches with movement, or swelling that returns repeatedly after activity. Early evaluation with imaging can identify the underlying cause and guide treatment. Waiting on a significant knee injury typically does not improve the outcome.
Emergency
Emergency signs
Go to the emergency room for a knee that is visibly deformed, a lower leg that is cold or pulseless below the knee, a knee injury with an open wound, or a knee injury sustained as part of major trauma with concern for other injuries. These presentations require emergency evaluation. For non-emergency knee swelling and pain, orthopedic evaluation is appropriate.
Orthopedic evaluation for knee swelling in Key West
Key West Concierge Orthopedics provides knee evaluation with on-site X-ray. X-ray identifies fractures, joint space changes, and bony abnormalities. The orthopedic evaluation determines whether additional imaging such as MRI is warranted and guides conservative treatment options including bracing, physical therapy recommendations, and image-guided injections for appropriate presentations. For visitors on a limited timeline, a same-day evaluation early in the week gives you the most time to implement a treatment plan before departure. Same-day evaluation may be available. Call ahead to confirm.
Frequently asked questions.
Is a swollen knee always serious?
Not always, but significant swelling, particularly swelling that limits motion or follows a pop or a giving-way sensation, warrants evaluation. An orthopedic assessment with on-site X-ray helps determine the cause and appropriate treatment. Key West Concierge Orthopedics can provide same-day evaluation. Call ahead.
Should I put ice on a swollen knee?
Ice wrapped in a cloth (not applied directly to skin) can help reduce swelling and discomfort in the first 24-48 hours after an acute knee injury. Elevate the leg when possible. This is reasonable initial care while arranging for evaluation, not a substitute for evaluation when significant swelling is present.
