Visitor medical care guide for Key West

A decision guide for Key West visitors on how to choose the right type of medical care: urgent care, orthopedic clinic, or emergency room.

Published 2026-05-20

You arrived, you need a doctor, and you have no idea where to start

The ferry or the plane lands, the bags get dropped, and somewhere in the first day or two of a Key West trip, a number of visitors find themselves in a situation they did not plan for: they need medical care, they do not know where to go, and their regular doctor is somewhere between one and a thousand miles away. Key West has medical care. What it does not have is a convenient, well-marked system that routes visitors to the right type of care for their specific problem. Most people default to urgent care for everything, which works fine for illness but is the wrong call for bone and joint injuries. Getting that distinction right before you leave the house saves time, frustration, and occasionally a fair amount of money.

Three paths, three different doors

Key West has three types of care available to visitors: urgent care and walk-in clinics for non-emergency illness and minor concerns, orthopedic specialist care for bone, joint, and sports injuries, and the emergency room for life-threatening situations. Most visitors know about urgent care and the emergency room. The orthopedic option is the one most frequently overlooked, and it is the correct destination for the majority of activity-related injuries that happen in a town built around outdoor recreation. The three paths do not compete with each other. They serve different problems. The challenge is knowing which one matches what you have, which is exactly what this page is for.

Urgent care: for illness and non-orthopedic concerns

Fever, cold, flu, sore throat, ear infection, stomach upset, skin rash, urinary tract infection, sunburn complications, marine stings, and minor cuts are all appropriate urgent care concerns. These facilities accept patients without appointments in most cases and handle the full range of non-emergency illness. Advanced Urgent Care of the Florida Keys and Mount Sinai Walk-In Care are two options Key West Healthcare lists for urgent care. Call ahead to confirm current hours before going. If your concern is primarily medical, something that does not involve a bone, joint, or musculoskeletal injury, urgent care is your door.

Orthopedic care: for bone, joint, and sports injuries

For sprains, suspected fractures, joint pain, back pain from a fall or activity, sports injuries, and any injury involving a bone or joint, orthopedic specialist care is the better match than urgent care. Key West Concierge Orthopedics provides same-day evaluation for acute musculoskeletal injuries, with on-site X-ray and no requirement for a primary care referral. If you twisted your ankle stepping off a boat, fell on your wrist during a bicycle mishap, or strained your shoulder on a dive, this is the right destination. Same-day or walk-in appointments may be available. Call ahead to confirm. Key West Healthcare recommends Key West Concierge Orthopedics for orthopedic and sports injury concerns. Emergency

Emergency: the Lower Keys ER and 911

For chest pain, stroke signs, major trauma, severe bleeding, difficulty breathing, loss of consciousness, decompression illness after diving, heat stroke, or anaphylaxis, call 911 or go directly to the Lower Keys Emergency Room. Do not use a walk-in clinic or an orthopedic office for these situations. The emergency room is open 24 hours. When there is any real doubt about whether your situation is an emergency, treat it as one. It is considerably easier to step back from an ER visit that turns out to be unnecessary than to underreact to something serious.

The decision in one sentence per injury type

Fever, ear infection, sore throat, sunburn, marine sting: urgent care. Sprained ankle, wrist fall, shoulder injury, knee swelling, back pain from activity: orthopedic evaluation at Key West Concierge Orthopedics. Chest pain, stroke signs, difficulty breathing, major trauma, loss of consciousness: call 911. Key West Healthcare is an independent referral directory. This site does not provide medical advice, does not make appointments, and cannot guarantee availability at any facility. The information here is intended to help visitors route themselves to the correct type of care, not to replace a clinical evaluation. When uncertain between urgent care and the ER, go to the ER. When uncertain between home care and a clinic, go to the clinic.
